04 Capture One sharpening vs no sharpening This is enabled by default, but I’ve deselected it for the test below to see what different it makes. However, if you open the Process Recipe panel and click the Adjustments section, you’ll see there’s a Disable Sharpening checkbox. 03 Capture One sharpeningĬapture One Pro 7 can also export images at different sizes, but doesn’t offer a choice of interpolation options. If you’re exporting images for on-screen or online use, this is the one to go for. It gives reasonable results for both enlargement and reduction, but favours smooth tones rather than sharp detail.īicubic sharper is designed specifically for resampling images downwards, and this image, right, is much sharper than the other two. In fact, though, it’s only marginally sharper than the Bicubic setting, shown in the centre.īicubic resampling is a kind of default amongst image-editors. The default Auto result is on the left, and you might expect this to automatically choose the best resampling method for the size change being applied. 02 DxO Auto vs Bicubic vs Bicubic sharperĪnd here you can see the results (remember – you can click on these images to see a full-size version). These aren’t sharpening tools – this menu simply changes the way DxO Optics Pro calculates the pixel values. They’re on the drop-down Interpolation menu, which I’ve circled in red. 01 DxO export settingsĭxO Optics Pro 9 offers different resampling options when you export a file – if you’ve used Photoshop or Elements to resample images, you’ll recognise them straight away. I’ve used the same test, and the same image I used last time (above), exporting the full-res file at a height of 1024 pixels for web use. In part 2, I want to find out whether the same applies for DxO Optics Pro 9 and Capture One Pro 7. In part 1 I compared the results from Aperture (which has no export sharpening), Lightroom (which does) and the dedicated Perfect Resize plug-in.

"Bad" copy of PL 12mm f1.4 "fixed".Export sharpening is a setting that’s often overlooked when you generate images for online or on-screen viewing, but it makes a big difference to how sharp your pictures look.Įvery time you resample an image, you introduce a degree of blur because the software has to interpolate new pixel values – and this applies when you’re downsizing images for web use too. Manual focus tele lens techniques with m4/3 for birds and BIF's Seems to be time again for a shootout to see what works best for me this year. DxO Optics Pro 8 has enough new features and improvements to keep even the most demanding photographer happy, with most of them aimed at automating adjustments. Right on the heels of PhaseOnes new Capture One Pro 7, DxO Labs released version 8 of DxO Optics Pro, their RAW converter and image-editing app. Plenty of adjusts available (in advanced user mode). Smart Tools Can Automate Pretty Much Anything.

Make sure you present the program with your test files that use all your lenses to make sure the appropriate camera plus lens files are downloaded. Currently using Silkypix (good but expensive) and AfterShot Pro (cheap and not quite so good) but DxO definitely has a good reputation. I’d be happy to just be able to open the raw / ProRaw DNGs within DxO PL4 without a DxO module. Moreover, for newer models the in-phone corrections seem to have advanced dramatically.

Doing the sums now as it is initial cost plus likely future update costs that determine total $$ consumed. I say this in part because I was never very impressed with the corrections provided by the DxO optics module for the iPhone 7.

Might convince me to pay up for latest version to do justice to my E-PL5 files. Downloaded and playing with my E-PL1 and LX3 files - looks good. Most new cameras aren't supported but there is a few that a lot of people here have/use e.g.
